Today, Deepika Padukone lives in Mumbai with her husband Ranveer Singh, but she frequently visits her parents who live in India's Silicon City, Bengaluru. Before becoming a Mumbaikar, Deepi used to live in Bengaluru. She did her schooling at the popular girl’s school, Sophia High, and completed her pre-university education at Mount Carmel College.
Deepika was recently hospitalised when the actor complained of uneasiness and underwent numerous tests in a hospital in Mumbai. She is reportedly doing well now. Here are seven lesser-known facts about Deepika Padukone - one of the highest paid actresses in India, who happens to be a Bangalorean.
1. Deepi was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and raised in Bengaluru
“My connect with the hometown is still emotional and nostalgic," Deepika said in an interview with The Hindu. “Everything is just the same, anywhere I go and even within the film industry when anything about Bangalore is mentioned, my name comes up. I am proud of it. Especially when people talk about the way I was brought up, my culture.”
2. Deepi was a socially awkward child and did not have many friends
While studying at Sophia High, Bengaluru, Deepi was reportedly a socially awkward child. Her focus was on badminton, and she started playing competitively from a young age. Describing her daily routine in an interview she said, "I would wake up at five in the morning, go for the physical training, go to school, again go for badminton, finish my homework, and go to sleep". Deepi played badminton throughout her school years and also played baseball in a few state-level tournaments.
3. Deepi was a child model at the age of 8
Padukone started working as a child model at the age of eight. She appeared in a few advertising campaigns. In the tenth grade, she decided to change her focus towards becoming a fashion model. She explained her transition in an interview stating, "I realised that I was playing the game (badminton) only because it ran in the family. So, I asked my father whether I could give up the game and he wasn’t upset at all." In 2004 she began her full-time career as a model.
4. Deepi studied Kannada as a third language in school
Deepi in a press conference for a film promo admits that she has lost touch with the language Kannada after living in Mumbai for long and her struggle to speak the language is obvious. She said that Kannada was her third language at school and Konkani was the language they spoke at home. She admits that it’s not anyone’s fault though because when people move out to a city like Mumbai, all you hear is Hindi and English and you naturally lose touch.
5.Deepi's favourite food is Rasam, and she loves South Indian food
Whenever in town, Deepika makes it a point to visit a few places she loves. One such place is Veena Stores in Malleshwaram according to Asianet News. A few years ago, she had visited the iconic eatery to have a bite of fresh Idly- Vada, and she went in the morning at 6.30 am to avoid unnecessary attention. Deepi's parents live in Malleshwaram and are regular visitors to Veena Stores and CTR Dose Corner.
6.Deepi made her debut in a Kannada Film
Deepika announced in 2006 that she would make her film debut with Aishwarya, a Kannada film directed by Indrajit Lankesh. The romantic comedy was a remake of the Telugu film Manmadhudu, and she was cast opposite the actor Upendra. When asked about why a Kannada debut she says “Like how Sharukh Khan is to Bollywood, Upendra is for Sandalwood. I lived my entire childhood here and a debut in Sandalwood, therefore, made sense.” she said in an interview given to The Hindu. The film proved to be a commercial success and received positive reviews. But according to film critics like RG Vijayasarathy of Rediff.com Padukone needed to work on the emotional sequences in the movie.
7. Deepi still cherishes her fondest memories of Bengaluru
The ace actor misses everything about Bengaluru from early morning drives to school, going to Cubbon Park and Kanteerava Stadium in the mornings for badminton practice, masala dosa at CTR. Deepi candidly admits in an interview to The Hindu that her heart and soul live in Bengaluru. The sporting streak from her childhood continues and she says that today it is more of a workout for her and helps her in recreation. The first thing she does when she is back in Bengaluru is to catch up with family and stay-at-home clothes. She also visits her relatives when she is back in Bengaluru and loves trying out new restaurants & cuisines.
